KLM Royal Dutch Airlines was founded on October 7, 1919 to serve the Netherlands and its colonies. KLM is today the oldest airline still operating under its original name. KLM has been part of the AIR FRANCE KLM group since the merger in 2004. KLM is the core of the KLM Group, which further includes the wholly-owned subsidiaries KLM Cityhopper, transavia.com, and Martinair. One of KLM’s key partners is its home base, Schiphol. Aviation in the Netherlands is responsible for 290,000 jobs and contributes EUR 26 billion to gross national product. Its strength is due in large part to the synergy between the Schiphol hub and the network of KLM. Schiphol handled a record number of 52.6 million passengers in 2013. More than 70 per cent of them flew with KLM Group or its partners, and 50 per cent flew directly with KLM.
