Public access defibrillation
In case of cardiac arrest
To assist guests who may be experiencing a cardiac arrest, there are 80 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) around the terminal.
AEDs are lifesavers that are easy for members of the public to use.
What’s an automated external defibrillator?
An automated external defibrillator, or AED, is a portable electronic device used to treat potentially life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias (abnormal heartbeats) that can lead to sudden cardiac arrest. The application of electrical therapy, or defibrillation, stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm.
How do I use an AED?
If you suspect someone is in cardiac arrest:
- Call 9-1-1 and tell them you are at YEG
- Grab an automated defibrillator
- Pull the tab on the defibrillator to activate the voice commands
- Follow the guidance of the voice commands
- Stay with the patient until Emergency Response Services arrives
Why does YEG have AEDs?
Each day, 100 Canadians die as a result of sudden cardiac arrest. With sudden cardiac arrest, time is critical.
YEG has placed defibrillators around the airport due to the increased numbers of travelers.
