Airside Vehicle Operators’ Permits
What is an AVOP?
An AVOP certifies airport employees who are able to operate vehicles and equipment airside, which means driving on our Aprons, Runways and Taxiways.
Types of AVOP
- A D/A Permit allows an employee to drive vehicles and equipment on Aprons and service roads
- A D Permit allows an employee to operate vehicles and equipment on Runways and Taxiways
Key items to note
- A Valid Red Pass (RAIC) and provincial driver’s license are required prior to applying for an AVOP
- Obtaining an AVOP is based on an employee’s need and right to access these areas as it pertains to their role
How to apply for an AVOP
1. Review of Airside Traffic Directives
The Airside Traffic Directives combine the regulations and policies governing the use of the D and D/A permits for the specialized airside environment at the Edmonton International Airport.
It is the intent of the directives to ensure the safest operations for everyone while working airside and minimize all risk to as low as reasonably practicable.

2. Complete the online training program
When ready to initiate online training, E-mail AVOP@flyeia.com and you will be set up with the YEG RapidLMS online training. There is a short exam at the end of the online training proving your competency of the material. A certificate of completion will be issued upon obtaining a pass mark of 100%.
Your company may be setup to initiate this online training through RapidLMS, check with your supervisor to see if this is the case for you.
3. Practical driving test
A driving test in the employee’s company vehicle is completed to prove competency and ensure safe operations. This may be competed through a company’s trainer or contact us at AVOP@flyeia.com to book a driving test.
4. Visit the Pass Office
Book an appointment at the Pass Office here.
Employees must bring their driver’s license, the completed AVOP Application form (link at the top right of this page) and proof of completing the practical driving test from the examiner to their appointment.
