What you need to know about cannabis and travel

Recreational cannabis use in Canada became legal on October 17, 2018.

Please read the following information about travelling or using cannabis at YEG. It is your responsibility to understand all local, provincial, federal and international regulations related to cannabis.

Frequently asked questions

  • You are allowed a maximum amount of 30 grams of cannabis in your possession
  • You are allowed to travel between Canadian destinations with cannabis in your possession (either in carry-on or checked baggage)
  • Passengers are not allowed to have more than 30 grams. Disposal bins are at all security screening checkpoints where passengers can dispose of cannabis prior to travelling. This will be collected by the RCMP for disposal.
  • Regulations for travelling while intoxicated do not change. Airline employees are authorized to refuse service to a passenger they believe to be intoxicated.

Important: If you are legally travelling within Canada with cannabis and your flight is diverted into the United States, you may be required to disembark from the aircraft and go through the customs process. If this occurs, you must immediately contact the Canadian Embassy. You may be arrested and detained in the United States.

It is illegal to take any amount of cannabis across the Canadian border (entering or exiting).

It is illegal to cross any US border with cannabis or drug paraphernalia.

Canadians who work in the cannabis industry, or hold financial investments in the cannabis industry may be inadmissible to the United States if they are travelling for business-related reasons.
