United to introduce new non-stop service to Edmonton
December 19, 2012 (Edmonton, AB) – From the bustling boardrooms of Wall Street to the leafy lanes of Central Park, New York City is now only four and a half hours away from Edmonton thanks to United’s new non-stop service between Edmonton International Airport (EIA) and the airline’s New York hub at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR).
This new year-round, non-stop service will operate six times a week, both ways, on a United Airbus A319 jet, starting May 1 from Newark and May 2 from EIA. The jet will be configured with eight seats in United Business, 40 in Economy Plus, and 72 in United Economy. Newark Liberty International Airport is only 30 kilometres from Manhattan and only a quick train, bus or cab ride away from the Big Apple. And a stellar flight schedule allows for same-day business trips and convenient year-round travel to the ‘Crossroads of the World’!
Edmonton-Newark UA773: 7:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (travel time 4:30 h) every day except Sunday
Newark-Edmonton UA810: 8:00 p.m. – 11:12 p.m. (travel time 5:12 h) every day except Saturday
“New York was EIA’s number one non-stop destination target and we are excited, after years of hard work, to partner with United to bring this service to our region,” says Reg Milley, EIA President and CEO. “This is a major victory for our business community, who bolstered the drive to establish New York non-stop service with support letters and other powerful expressions of their willingness to use the service.”
“United is pleased to expand our network to include Edmonton’s first nonstop service to the U.S. East Coast,” said Jim Ferea, United’s managing director of domestic planning. “These new flights not only offer Edmonton travellers easy access to New York, but also offer convenient connections to points beyond from United’s leading trans-Atlantic hub at Newark Liberty.
Many Edmonton and northern Alberta businesses have close ties to New York City, especially in finance and related sectors. New York City is also a major tourist draw for Edmontonians. More than 44,000 passengers travelled between Edmonton and the New York region for business or pleasure in 2012 through Newark Liberty International Airport.
This new non-stop service will also improve EIA customer access to the US eastern seaboard and provide easy connections to destinations ranging from Boston to Berlin to Bogotá through United’s primary northeastern hub. Customers will also have access to a vast global network courtesy of Star Alliance (of which United is a member), allowing them to accumulate frequent flyer miles on all Star Alliance carriers.
US passenger demand soars at EIA
With established non-stop services to Chicago, Denver, Houston and San Francisco, United is EIA’s leading US carrier. This new route further strengthens United’s relationship with EIA and the Edmonton region, while bringing EIA’s total number of US non-stops to 13.
US passenger traffic is the fastest-growing market at EIA, with a 10.5 per cent increase over the past 12 months, helping EIA achieve its record-breaking 6.6-million-passenger benchmark between October 2011 and October 2012.
