New route expands northwestern Canada’s global travel options

Edmonton, Alta. — Whether you need to bring your laptop or your flip flops, pack your suitcase, and fly direct from Edmonton to Mexico City.

Edmonton International Airport (EIA) is thrilled to announce the arrival of Mexicana Airlines, offering six-times-weekly, non-stop service between Edmonton and Mexico City. The new route is the second year-round international flight offered at EIA.

“Mexicana’s non-stop service between EIA and Mexico City is a key new transportation link to further the growing economic, political and social relationships between Edmonton and Alberta and Mexico and South and Central America,” says Peter McCart, EIA Vice President, Marketing & Business Development.

“Mexicana’s choice to fly Edmonton is an important addition to the current air service options available at our airport,” says McCart.

In 2007, the airport reported an increase of 85 per cent in international passenger traffic over 2006 statistics. The addition of Mexicana’s route will bolster these strong numbers.

“The growth in economic ties between Canada, Alberta and especially the city of Edmonton and Mexico led to the development of this route that without a doubt will be a complete success,” says Jorge Goytortua , Mexicana Airlines, Vice President, Sales U.S. and Canada. “With this addition to our network of routes, Mexicana Airlines now connects five Canadian cities to Mexico as well as Central and South America, reinforcing its status as the first international airline in Mexico.”

Mexicana Airlines has been operating in the commercial aviation market for 86 years, and offers flights to over 50 destinations in North, Central and South America and the Caribbean from its hub at Mexico City International Airport. In 2007, the airline received World Travel Awards in three categories including Best Airline in Mexico and Latin America.

The inaugural inbound flight for the new route arrived at EIA June 2; the inaugural outbound flight departs EIA June 3.
