New Non-Stop Service to L.A. – 7th U.S. Hub for International Airport

Edmonton — America West Airlines announced today that it will introduce new daily non-stop service between Edmonton and Los Angeles commencing June 4th, 2004. Los Angeles is now the seventh U.S. non-stop destination offered at Edmonton International Airport, up from two in 1995, and the third new non-stop U.S. destination offered by America West since its introduction to our community in 2003. Service to Phoenix commenced in October 2003 and to Las Vegas on March 1, 2004.

This newest destination is strong for both business and leisure travel. The introduction of this non-stop service is also significant for the film industry in Alberta as the year-round service will help stimulate inbound travel for an industry that is gaining importance in our economy. The daily non-stop service will facilitate the ease of access to the lower cost facilities and resources available to the film industry in the Capital Region.

“This is great news for the film community in the Greater Edmonton Region,” said Patti Tucker Edmonton Tourism Film Commissioner. “The film and television industry is a globally competitive market. When producers hear that you have a scheduled non-stop service they sit up and pay attention. This will be a great selling tool for Edmonton.”

Edmonton Airports president and CEO Scott Clements states: “With California being our number one U.S destination, the non-stop Los Angeles service will better meet the needs of both the business and leisure traveller on a year-round basis. America West is now our dominant U.S. carrier providing transborder services from Edmonton.”

America West Vacations also offers packages to destinations throughout the Southwestern U.S, Hawaii, Mexico and Costa Rica. America West’s worldwide partners include Big Sky Airlines, British Airways, EVA Air, Hawaiian Airlines, and Northwest Airlines.

The Edmonton-Los Angeles route will be operated on a Canadair Regional Jet (CRJ) 900 series with a maximum capacity of 86 seats. America West is the first North American carrier to receive delivery of the modern CRJ-900 series aircraft. This type of aircraft also serves the existing Phoenix and Las Vegas routes.
