Local hoteliers to bring global hotel brand to EIA

189-room hotel boon for business, northern and connecting passengers

August 13, 2010 (Edmonton, Alta.) – Edmonton International Airport (EIA) today announced an agreement with Edmonton-based Platinum Investments Ltd. to build a 189-room Courtyard by Marriott hotel at the airport. Construction begins next spring and the hotel is slated to open in the fall of 2012 – just in time for the opening of Expansion 2012.

“We are thrilled to partner with Platinum Investments Ltd. to bring this leading global hotel brand to EIA,” says Peter McCart, EIA Vice President, Marketing and Business Development. “The Courtyard by Marriott will provide business, northern and connecting travellers with high-quality accommodations to complement the new array of shopping, dining and entertainment choices they will experience when Expansion 2012 opens.”

Quality hotels are an expected service at international airports. Every day, EIA customer service representatives receive at least five requests or inquiries about hotel accommodations at the airport.

Modern and bright in feel, the eight-storey, 190,000 square-foot hotel will feature regular, executive and presidential suites, 10,000 square feet of banquet and meeting facilities, a full-service restaurant and lounge, state-of-the-art fitness facilities, an indoor pool and whirlpool spa, fully wired and wireless Internet services and airline service check-in. Guests will also have great views of the airport.

Platinum Investments Ltd. owns and operates two globally recognized brand hotels in west Edmonton. They are Edmonton’s top rated hotels on the popular travel website Trip Advisor. Platinum’s diligent focus on providing stellar customer service perfectly fits EIA’s “we’ll move you” customer service promise.

“A Courtyard by Marriott hotel bolsters EIA’s growing status as an international airport and we are delighted to bring this high-tech, high-style hotel brand to our region’s air gateway,” says Rahim Meghji of Platinum Investments Ltd. “The Courtyard by Marriott’s public space evokes a residential feeling of scale and an ambience that is casual and of high quality, allowing guests to feel relaxed, comfortable and welcome – a perfect fit to warmly welcome the world to our region.”

The Courtyard by Marriott hotel will be located just to the northeast of the terminal and connected to it via a heated pedway.

“The Courtyard by Marriott is the fastest-growing brand in North America and Marriott is proud that EIA will be home to our second in-terminal hotel in Canada,” says Michael Beckley, Senior Vice President, Development, Marriott Hotels & Resorts Canada. “Marriott continues to grow and identify new opportunities and strategic relationships throughout Canada to build the largest market share in the industry.”
