It’s show time: Non-stop service to NYC ‘opens’ today
Business and tourism ties drive United’s service between NYC and Edmonton
May 2, 2013 (Edmonton, AB) – Broadway shows and Wall Street boardroom deals are now closer than ever for Edmonton and region travellers as the curtain lifted this morning on United’s new year-round, non-stop service between Edmonton International Airport (EIA) and Newark Liberty International Airport.
The flight operates six times a week on a United Airbus A319 jet configured with eight seats in United Business, 40 in Economy Plus, and 72 in United Economy. Newark Liberty International Airport is only 30 kilometres from Manhattan and only a quick train, bus or cab ride away from the “Big Apple.” The convenient flight schedule allows for same-day business trips and convenient year-round travel to New York City. Newark is one of United’s primary hubs, offering excellent connections to major destinations in Europe, Latin America and the US.
Edmonton-Newark: 7:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. (travel time 4:30 h) every day except Sunday
Newark-Edmonton: 8:00 p.m. – 11:12 p.m. (travel time 5:12 h) every day except Saturday
“Direct air service between Edmonton and the New York area increases Alberta’s connectivity to the entire globe. It opens up a world of possibilities for business – especially as we work to attract more visitors and potential investors to our province,” said Dr. Richard Starke, Minister of Alberta Tourism, Parks and Recreation. “Securing this connection between Alberta and the important urban centres of the Eastern seaboard is a great example of how we are reaching beyond our borders and increasing our market access.”
More than 44,000 passengers travelled between Edmonton and the New York area through that region’s major airports in 2012, demonstrating the high demand for the service. New York was EIA’s number one requested non-stop destination before United announced in December it would start serving the route in May 2013. Edmonton’s business community helped secure the flight with support letters and by providing important data to bolster the cause.
“United is pleased to expand our network to include Edmonton’s first non-stop service to the U.S. East Coast,” said Michael Stacy, United’s regional sales director for Canada and the Midwest. “These new flights not only offer Edmonton travellers easy access to New York, but also offer convenient connections to points beyond from United’s leading trans-Atlantic hub at Newark Liberty.”
With the addition of Newark, United offers non-stop service to five U.S. destinations from EIA. Chicago, Denver, Houston and San Francisco are the others. United customers also have access to a vast global network courtesy of Star Alliance, allowing them to accumulate frequent flyer miles on all Star Alliance carriers.
“We are excited to partner with United to connect New York and the US eastern seaboard with Edmonton and northwestern Canada, helping expand the many business ties and leisure opportunities between the two cities and regions,” says Reg Milley, EIA President and CEO.
EIA now serves 13 non-stop US destinations as part of a growing portfolio of over 50 non-stop domestic, US and international destinations.
