Icelandair from Edmonton to Reykjavik Starts Earlier, Stays Longer
October 17, 2013 (Edmonton, AB) – Edmonton International Airport (EIA) is pleased with Icelandair’s announcement that it will expand its Edmonton to Reykjavik service by beginning the new route on March 5, 2014, and operating it year-round. The airline had originally planned to operate the flight 41 weeks per year, starting on March 26, 2014.
“Due to the demand for international carriers from Edmonton and the positive response Icelandair has received, we think it makes sense to operate year-round. We are also moving our launch date to three weeks earlier than originally planned. We see this as the beginning of a strong relationship with Alberta and anticipate Edmonton strengthening our bond with the Canadian market,” said Thorsteinn Egilsson, General Manager of The Americas.
“We’re really pleased that Icelandair’s service from Edmonton to Reykjavik will start earlier, and stay longer, with year-round service. What this means for all Albertans is more opportunity to access Icelandair’s great European network,” said Reg Milley, CEO of Edmonton International Airport.
“Icelandair recognizes the demand and opportunity in Edmonton, and they’re making a strategic investment in the Capital Region by increasing our connections to Europe. More access and more service to Europe from Edmonton is a win for Icelandair, and a win for Edmonton,” said Edmonton Mayor Stephen Mandel.
Service from Edmonton will operate on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays on an Icelandair Boeing 757 seating 183 passengers in a three-class layout. The 6-hour, 20-minute eastbound flight will depart from EIA at 6:30 pm and arrive in Reykjavik at 6:50 am the following morning. The westbound flight will leave Reykjavik at 4:45 pm and arrive at EIA at 5:30 pm the same day, with flying time of 6 hours, 45 minutes.
Icelandair’s interline agreement with WestJet also means better links to Europe from across Alberta and western Canada. WestJet passengers connecting to Icelandair flights at EIA can book a single combined e-ticket for both airlines, and enjoy the convenience of single check-in for all flights, with baggage sent through to the final destination.
