Edmonton, Alta. — Airports Council International — North America (ACI-NA) announced the winners of its 2007 Excellence in Marketing and Communications Contest Aug. 21, honouring Edmonton International Airport (EIA) with two awards.

Edmonton International was awarded First Place in the Partnering with Carriers category for its community campaign to build support for Air Canada’s non-stop service between Edmonton International and London-Heathrow. The three-year campaign involves many community partners including the City of Edmonton, Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, Travel Alberta and the Edmonton Jasper Marketing Group (EJAG). Business, political and community stakeholders also played a major role by providing letters and other forms of support.

Air Canada launched three-times per week non-stop scheduled service between Edmonton and London last fall. The service was expanded to a daily schedule April 1, 2007.

The campaign also focused on marketing the service both locally and in the United Kingdom to ensure that the new route was a success. Responding to strong support for the service, Air Canada recently announced that it that it will continue to offer its summer daily non-stop service between Edmonton International and London-Heathrow through the winter.

EIA’s work with airlines and community groups have also resulted in significant increases to air service capacity on existing routes serving the Edmonton region market during the past 18 months.

“The Edmonton community demonstrated to Air Canada that the Edmonton region needed and could support year-round non-stop scheduled service to London,” said Reg Milley, Edmonton Airports President and CEO. “This award shows that great things can happen when community partners work together toward a common goal — in this case, securing non-stop overseas service for the Edmonton and northern markets.”

Edmonton International was also recognized by ACI-NA with a Second Place award in the Public Relations Campaigns category for Careers Take Flight, an ongoing campaign to promote job opportunities with 65 companies at Edmonton International.

In 2007, 73 airports submitted almost 300 entries for the ACI-NA awards. Categories cover a wide range of media including brochures, advertising, marketing and public relations campaigns, newsletters, special events, video and film productions, and websites. A total of 43 airports received awards, including five Canadian airports. Edmonton International was the only Canadian airport to receive multiple awards.

“As facilities where millions of passengers spend time daily, airports have an important responsibility to ensure that they are conveying the right messages to their customers and communities, said ACI-NA President Greg Principato. “Our winners this year have done a spectacular job at clearly communicating their services.”

Award recipients will be recognized at ACI-NA’s 16th Annual Conference and Exhibition Oct. 3, 2007 in Kansas City, MO.
