Edmonton Airports has now received the legally required 72 hours advance notice of strike action from the Public Service Alliance of Canada, on behalf of our 115 support staff employees.

The notice was received from PSAC today, meaning the earliest the union can initiate job action is 5AM Monday, July 31/2000.

The employees negatively impacted by this decision are employed by Edmonton Airports in a variety of areas including accounting, field and general maintenance, environmental services, information booth, marketing, planning and engineering and real estate services.

Areas not impacted by this job action include fire suppression and rescue, fuel delivery, housekeeping and security services. With the exception of fire suppression and rescue, all of the other above-described services are contracted to private companies. Other services not impacted by the scheduled work stoppage include airport parking, airline and retail operations.

Edmonton Airports’ management doesn’t anticipate any significant customer service impacts during the scheduled work stoppage, due to the nature of the functions performed by the affected employees. The most notable presence of the scheduled work stoppage may be the presence of pickets outside the terminal building. However, due to the potential of pickets and continued construction, anyone travelling to Edmonton International Airport is urged to leave 15 minutes sooner.

At the request of Edmonton Airports, negotiations resumed this morning prior to receipt of strike notice. It is the intention of Edmonton Airports to continue negotiations, around the clock if necessary, towards finalizing a new contract prior to the scheduled work stoppage. Edmonton Airports’ management team has prepared a contingency plan in the event of job action. The plan re-assigns management employees to front-line areas to ensure continued operation of Edmonton International Airport for the benefit of our tenants and their customers. It is important to note the scheduled job action only pertains to Edmonton International Airport. Edmonton Airports does not employ staff at Edmonton City Centre Airport, Cooking Lake Airport or Villeneuve Airport.
