Today Edmonton Airports is pleased to announce a two-stage competition for public art commissions for the Southeast Terminal at Edmonton International Airport.

Two years ago, Edmonton Airports and our Capital Region stakeholders started the Air Terminal Redevelopment Project that will see the terminal and aircraft apron area double in size upon completion this November. The vision of this multi million-dollar expansion is to improve our facility for both current demands and future growth.

The project includes a design award-winning parkade that was completed 13 months ago. Phase two includes the construction a new terminal facility to the southeast of the current terminal. In the year 2001, a Central Hall that will feature an enhanced retail presence and observation deck for aircraft enthusiasts will connect the two.

During it’s genesis, the following objectives were defined for the new Southeast Terminal: ·

To celebrate Edmonton and Alberta in an aesthetically pleasing facility,
To reflect the culture and heritage of the Edmonton region,
To ensure customer convenience, comfort and satisfaction,
To provide clarity of space and function within a friendly environment,
To enable efficient airline operations.
These objectives were consolidated into the Mission Statement of Edmonton Airports Art Commission, which then formed the basis for the design. The Mission Statement reads…

“Celebrate the life-flow of the North Saskatchewan River and the drama of the prairie sky and light, while remembering the cultural history of Edmonton and looking forward to the future.”

The design team intends that the look and feel of the new terminal be linked in the minds of travelers to the Edmonton Region. The rich color palette of the prairie wheatfields and grasslands has formed the basis for the selection of interior materials and colors. The North Saskatchewan River, as it curves through the patchwork of wheatfields, is a motif that has been developed in flooring, ceiling, lighting and interior landscape design.
